Carolina Artists

The Carolina Artists meet monthly and feature interesting and informative presentations on art-related topics by artists from many venues.
Carolina Artists was formed in 1990 by working artists for the express purpose of providing more opportunities for local artists to be recognized within the central Carolina community.

The Guild is dedicated to both teaching and learning through the development of community educational arts programs such as demonstrations and workshops representing diverse artistic influences, expanding awareness of events and educational opportunities through information networking, presentations, demonstrations, meetings and mailings, and providing opportunities for artists to exhibit and sell their works through participation in community events and hosting annual shows and sponsoring contests.

THE CAROLINA ARTISTS

Mary Ellen Bennett

Mary Ellen is a self-taught artist that creates art in a method where she uses a glue gun and crayons to create abstract pieces of art. She resides in Spencer, North Carolina. She has created a new way to turn various pieces of found objects, such as old guitars, into bright, colorful pieces of art. Contact Mary Ellen at mebennett@carolina.rr.com.

Carolyn Blackman

Carolyn graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School in Asheville, NC, UNC-CH, and received an MA from Appalachian State University. A retired Rowan County high school teacher, she taught math and Latin. She began drawing and painting at an early age, but set aside serious time for art only after retirement. She has studied in classes and workshops with Clara Childs, Betty Bonner Carmichael Steele, John Brady, Frank Saunders, Tom Jones, Patt Legg, Marietta Smith, Jim Taylor and others.
She is active in the Carolina Artists, Plein Air Carolina, and art classes at Rufty-Homes. She works in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, pen, and ink. Her current work centers on landscapes, particularly mountain scenes. Contact Carolyn at carolynblackman@fibrant.com.

Pamela Cordts

Pamela Cordts is originally from Illinois and lived in Indiana before moving to Salisbury in 1979. She worked as a Human Resource Manager for thirty years. Since retirement in 2010, she has studied art through the teachings of Marietta Smith and Leslie Frontz. “I have always had an interest in art but never pursued it until 2010. I have found art to be a way to share the beauty of God’s creation, love and grace.”

Janet Isenhour

Janet enjoys painting a wide variety of subjects, finding inspiration in scenes of beauty in nature and in everyday life. She is especially captivated by the interaction between light and shadows and enjoys experimenting with combinations of mediums and various painting surfaces. Her most recent commission work has been in pastel portraits of people, pets and homes. In addition to pastels, she enjoys working in oils, acrylics and colored pencil, but is always drawn back to watercolor, which is her first love.
She has studied art through courses and workshops at Rowan Cabarrus Community College and Waterworks Visual ArtCenter, as well as privately with award winning artists and instructors such as Katherine Skipper, Elizabeth Watson, Tom Jones, Chuck McLauchlan, Clyde Overcash, Cathy Sigmon, Patt Legg, John Brady and Kaneko McNeill.
Janet states of her art, “I don’t try to make grand political or philosophical statements with my art. I paint for the pure joy of it – bright, happy pictures of flowers and landscapes. If I’m feeling down, I don’t paint, I write a poem. Sometimes I write a lot. Sometimes I paint a lot. I rarely do both. My writing and my art tend to be introspective and inspirational, reflective of my passion for life and my deep Christian faith.”

Carolyn O. Kirkman

A native of Greensboro, NC, Carolyn has attended workshops and exhibited in various cities. Oil, acrylic and pastels are her mediums. Recently retired, she now feels she can devote more time to her favorite – portraits in pastels. A recent move to Salisbury has resulted in more portrait commissions.
She has won numerous awards for her paintings. Her work is included in corporate and private collections in North Carolina and South Carolina. Her paintings can be seen at Fun Finds Gallery and Southern Spirits Gallery. Her murals can be found at the Rowan Public Library and at First United Methodist Church. Kelly McCarthy

Kelly is a native of the Salisbury area, but spent a number of years in the mountains and Virginia for private schooling. She enjoys still life watercolor painting and taking local classes, first from Marrietta Smith & presently from Leslie Frontz. Her first exposure to watercolor painting was in taking an art class from Mrs. Betty Bonner Carmichael Steele of Salisbury and again from Sam James, a favorite high school art teacher. She is a new Carolina Artist member.

Clyde

Clyde is a Salisbury artist, working in watercolor and ink of generally local subjects. In addition, he has worked in acrylic in the impressionism style. Mary Roakes

Mary Roakes, a native North Carolinian, has lived and worked in Salisbury for many years and was a pre-school and elementary school teacher. She graduated from Catawba College and received a Master of Education from UNC-Charlotte.
Although she loved teaching art with students, she really didn’t paint until she retired. Mary has taken workshops and painted with Katherine Skipper, Tom Jones, Roger Bansemer, Patt Legg, Janet Isenhour and others. She loves painting landscapes, still-life and portraits, mainly in oil. Mary is currently a member of the Carolina Artists in Salisbury ans has served as co-chairperson of that organization’s expo for two terms.

Jo Ann Smith

Jo Ann started painting as an adult, but only started painting seriously about 10 years ago. Since that time, she has studied under Elizabeth Watson, Marietta Smith, Tom Jones, Katherine Skipper, Janet Isenhour, and Leslie Hudson-Tolles. She enjoys painting landscapes, still life, and animals, but her favorite is sunsets.

Ray Earnhardt

Ray’s art has been an evolution – initially focused on useful everyday tools made by hand, utilizing old-time methods (guns, bows, knives, arrowheads), to a more decorative aesthetic depicting scenes in nature. He is fascinated with critters and plant life and through photography and quiet moments of study, recreates these scenes from recycled metal (old file cabinets, farm implements, tv tube glass) using fire from a torch or his hand built forge. Ray is currently displaying “Deep Sea Star”.

Keyth Kahrs

Keyth is a representational artist who works in acrylics and transparent watercolor. His subject matter is varied, and in many instances features water, dramatic light with shadow and reflections. Landscapes are his favorite subject. His work has been described as California Super Realism, a term that he embraces with enthusiasm. Keyth is a resident artist at the Rail Walk Studios & Gallery. Don Moore

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Don received his art training at the University of Alabama through the MFA. Additional studies from the University of Georgia and training in painting and figure drawing was received at the Art Student’s League in NYC. Most of his life has been involved in teaching. He was the Art Director of Mitchell Community College in Statesville, NC, for 32 years. Moore is a Juried Member of the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem, NC; the Pastel Society of North Carolina and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. Lewellen Padgett

In 1990, Lewellen and her husband, Clyde, relocated to Salisbury where they have made their home on South Fulton Street. She has continued to refine her medium, Shadow Box Construction, and has shown in Charlotte at the Blue Pony Gallery, in Black Mountain at Seven Sisters, and the Blue Butterfly Gallery. She had a solo exhibition at Pfeiffer University. In 2005, she had an exhibition at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center entitled, “Incantations and Incarnations.” She has continued to show throughout North Carolina and is honored to have her work included in many patrons’ collections. Mark Stephenson

North Carolina native Mark Stephenson is a full-time artist based in Salisbury, NC who through a multi-faceted personal background, brings a unique perspective to his work. A graduate of Pfeiffer University, North Carolina State University and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Mark earned degrees in Civil Engineering and Vocal Performance. Mark relocated to New York City in the 1990s where he studied at the prestigious Art Students League with noted painters and sculptors Frank O’Cain, Leonid Gervitz, and Leonid Lerman. Success at the Art Students League ushered in awards and commissions including acceptance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s copyists program. Bailey Wingler

Bailey Wingler is a Visual Artist who calls Salisbury home. She began Just Bailey Designs in January 2014, marketing her artworks primarily online. Bailey creates a wide variety of artworks and specializes in personalized commissioned works including abstract pet portraits, whimsical decorative items and various custom signs and ornaments. Initially a self taught Artist, Bailey is now pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and is looking for new opportunities to grow in this field.
